We have chosen not to lie to our daughter about Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny or anything else. We do have the elf but only as a fun game for laughs. I plan to get the Christian Version next year.

In reply to Gina. Yes! Gina, so glad to read this, because I often feel that I am the only one has told my children the Truth about Santa. We definitely have them on the understanding that he is fictional and that the gifts are form Mommy and Daddy. We do however explain St NIck, being the real historical saint who inspired the man in red. My girls who are in school have to battle this daily "elf" in December, and it really tests them at such a young age. But the real reason for the season is etched into their young minds! Have a blessed Christmas.

There is an alternative to the elf for those who choose to tell there children the truth. It is a Shepard that is making his way to the baby Jesus with one story a day, kind of like the elf but the actual story of the birth of Christ

In reply to Becky Thompson. Becky! I was just telling Jo today about how I wished you would write a book about introducing children to Jesus in a way that they experience Jesus in a real way. I just got done (re)reading the story of Kolton and that man in the café and boohooed (again) over how REAL Jesus is to him... i want my girls to know Jesus that way and am THRILLED to know that that book is on the To-Do list (or, hopefully the "Doing" list)! Haha!This just made my night!

Beautifully written!
I arrived home this morning…what a crazy morning…but there was a little package on the doorstep. I was like…huh?…I didn’t order anything. Assumed it was the husbands. I quickly rushed the kids inside from the rain and sat the package on the table in the mudroom. As I was gathering groceries and rushing to get lunch…I forgot all about the package.
I was going through the stack of mail and I was like…hmm…well I will open it even if it isn’t mine. I was so excitingly surprised when it was YOUR book!!! As the table was covered with playdoh and the pine needles needed swept off the floor….I decided to open and just read the introduction before the craziness continued. It is such a breath of fresh air. I feel like you are my best momma friend whom I’ve never met. I know that this was sent to me from you through God. Such a blessing you are. The best gift I’ve ever bought myself. Pinterest will be taking a backseat after bedtime routine for a while till I am all done enjoying your book. Thank you so very much!

My main concern with your article is that you discuss grace after messing up within the context of using the elves, which sort of suggests that perhaps Elf on the Shelf is messing up. I think perhaps Christian Liberty may be a better support for using the elves or Santa rather than grace extended despite our sin.

I loved how some ladies we know addressed this very thing with their nonprofit, by creating ‘Shiney’ to help you share Christ’s love throughout the Christmas season. Something clicked in me this year on November 3rd when I watched a Christmas movie on Hallmark. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good love story and who wouldn’t be thrilled to fall in love during such a magical holiday. But, here comes the problem… the focus.

The movies/media etc… push the giving end of Christmas, that is backwards. Actually, Jesus came from heaven as the gift we would “received”. See? Christmas this year has been for me about receiving HIM. REALLY, REALLY, RECEIVING HIM! Receiving His glorious power, His delicate touch, His extraordinarily amazing love, His unspeakable sacrifice all for me. He came that we might receive Him as our Messiah.

It has changed how I view the cheesy movies, the presents, the tree, the ornaments, (we never have done the elves or Santa) but all the rest of the previous expectations of Christmas has changed.

This is only to share not to condemn, but Christmas looks different to me now and I hope with all my heart that if anyone is struggling with it they to might “get backwards”.
