I had a nearly IDENTICAL experience in college. I was selling books door-to-door in New Jersey (I know… that in itself is nutty). We parked our cars in one spot of an assigned neighborhood and basically peddled books for 12 hours a day, using maps to get around (pre-GPS era). I got HORRIBLY lost and had no idea where I was, it was around 10:30pm, dark, strange and foggy (you know, to make it even LESS terrifying). I saw a man carrying a lantern in the fog, walking a dog. He was older and kind looking and I said, “I can’t find my car” and he said, “I’ll take you where you can” and he directed my steps back to the neighborhood of my car. I didn’t even have my map with me. When I started walking away, I turned back to say ‘thank you’ and he was gone. Amazing.
