My daughter who is 7 asked me a similar question during the election when some newscaster decided to discuss how the candidates felt about abortion. It was tough to say, but I told her abortion was killing a baby before it was born. She understood killing a baby from the stories of Moses and Jesus.
Several months later she finally understood what adoption meant, and she was horrified that any mother would ever give up her baby. I reminded her that those women feel scared, or like they can’t do a good job, or can’t afford that baby, and that they have a choice. They can choose to kill that baby, or they can be super brave and give the baby to someone else who would love and care for it. She still couldn’t imagine a mom not wanting to keep its baby, but I hope I helped her to see that adoption is beautiful and courageous.
Having some of these deep talks with my kids has been TOUGH!

Thanks for writing this Becky! Everytime I read one of your blogs, I am inspired. You really do have a gift for wording things in such an honest way. Abortion is a truth that needs to be shared. It is a huge part of the world in which we live, yet is rarely a topic of conversation. Understandably so, since it has affected numerous lives in one way or another. And as difficult as it is to discuss it with others, we must discuss it with our children, as you said. Our family prays nightly for all the unborn babies in the world.

Children have this ability to say what IS.

I wish we as adults could maintain the simplicity that makes easier to distinguish right from wrong.

Kudos to you! you did a great job not”sugar coating” the answer for the kids but still emphasizing the importance of the question with an answer they understood. As Christian parents we usually have to come up with these answers when we least expect them. Our miracles are always listening! Thank you for this article.

Thanks so much for the honesty of the post of your family’s discussion. As a parent of two children that both have been adopted, this hits the heart for me. My hope and prayer is that many will see the beautiful and difficulty of this post. May adoption be the focus of many who consider abortion.

I had a very similar conversation about a month ago… when my girls asked me what my bracelet means and why I wear it (it says “life”).
I also had to stop and think – do I tell them this harsh truth already? And I did. And it hurt.
