For Those Who Feel Afraid Right Now

Me: Okay, God, here’s the thing. I’m scared. I’m trying not to be, but I am.

God: I know. Want to talk about it?

Me: Do we need to? I mean, you already know.

God: Let’s talk about it anyway… We’ve done this before.

Me: I know, I just feel like I should be bigger or stronger of something by now.

God: *waiting patiently, unhurried, undistracted, never annoyed.

Me: Okay. So, I’m afraid I’ll do everything I can to protect my family and it won’t be enough. I’m afraid of someone I love dying. I’m afraid the world won’t go back to what it was before. I’m afraid my life is always going to feel a little bit unsettled.

God: Anything else?

Me: EVERYTHING ELSE.

God: Remember how Jaxton woke up the other night and came running down the hall to your bedroom?

Me: Yes.

God: You were still awake, so when you heard him running, you started calling out to him before he even got to you… remember? Do you remember what you called out to him?

Me: I said, “You’re okay! You’re okay! You’re okay!”

God: Why did you call to him? Why didn’t you just wait for him to get to your room?

Me: Because I wanted him to know that I was awake, and I heard him, and he didn’t have to be afraid until he reached the end of the dark hallway.

God: Exactly. I hear you, daughter. I hear your thoughts racing like feet down the dark hallway. There’s an other side to all of this. I’m there already. I’ve seen the end of it. And I want you to know right here as you walk through it all, you’re okay. I haven’t gone to sleep, and I won’t.

Me: *crying. Can we sit together awhile? Can we just sit here a minute before I go back to facing it all?

God: There’s nothing I’d love more.

You may have seen this post floating around the internet. Yes, I’m the original author. I’m so glad it brough so many people comfort. When the pandemic began, there was so much uncertainty. I was so afraid. This short conversation with the Lord recentered my heart on truth and reminded me of His presence. I believe it did the same for many.

For the One Struggling with Comparison

A CONVERSATION ON COMPARISON

Me: “I’m having trouble.”

God: “Tell me more…”

(So I started to list all of the things I couldn’t do, making sure to name all of the people who did those things well.)

And God answered, “Oh. That’s an easy one. You’re having difficulty being those people because you’re you. Anything else we can solve together?”

Me: “Wait. Wait. Wait. I think you misunderstood me. I want to be as good as them. As a matter of fact, I’ll take the organization of _____ and the style of ______ and the charm of _____ and the realness of _____ and the interior decorating of _____. I am upset because I’m unable to be as good as all of those people in all of their best areas.”

God: “Mmmhmmm.”

Me: “What do you mean, Mmmmhmmm?”

God: “I mean that I hear you and I understand that you are disappointed.”

Me: “Okay, but are you going to do anything about it?”

God: “About what?”

Me: “About all of the things I’m not very good at and want to do well …”

God: “Oh. Umm. No. Your gifts aren’t broken. Remember the other gifts and talents I gave you? They are all great. You’re using them well. They are in good condition. Nothing around here needs fixing. So, we’re all set.”

Me: “You aren’t hearing me. I want her gifts.”

God: “Uh huh.”

Me: “But why can’t I have hers, too?”

God: “You can hear what you’re asking me. Right? Listen carefully. If those gifts were required for you to complete what I’ve asked you to do… I would have given you those gifts, too.”

Me: “So you’re saying I don’t need them?”

God: “Yes.”

Me: “And that I’m not missing out on them?”

God: “Correct.”

Me: “And that I should focus on what I can do well because those things are probably linked to what you have asked me to do?”

God: “Absolutely.”

If you need me today, I’ll be making a list of all of the things I do well… they might just reveal part of His plan.

The Miracle at 10:36 AM

I was praying the day before I was scheduled for surgery, and I heard the time, “10:36.” It wasn’t like I was on my knees in prayer and petition. I was cleaning my house and going about my business… just thinking and talking to God in my heart.

It wasn’t like a voice said it. It wasn’t even like a deep impression in my heart. It was like a thought… but it was clear… unlike some of the thoughts I had been having as I got closer and closer to the day of surgery.

I didn’t know what it meant, but I knew I should probably have people pray at that time (since it would be right in the middle of my two hour surgery.)

Later that night, my friend called me. “What time is your surgery tomorrow? I want to know so I can be praying.”

I told her,

“I go back at 9:45… but pray at 10:36. I just have a feeling that something important will happen then.”

I told my parents and husband as well.

The morning of surgery we arrived at the hospital two hours early just as they had recommended. I was prepped and given my IV. My parents came back to see me and then left as it got closer to to 9:45.

But 9:45 came and went… so did 10:00, 10:15 and 10:30.

I called my mom who was in the waiting room to tell her that they still hadn’t come back for me.

And she said, “Well, you know they are going to come at 10:36.”

We laughed at how crazy that would be… when just then there was a knock at my door. I looked at the digital clock on the wall above the doorway.

“Mom! I have to go. They’re here to take me to surgery. It IS 10:36!!!”

I couldn’t believe it. I told both nurses in the room about what had happened the day before and the significance of the timing. I told my husband to call my friend and tell her as well.

But just then… in the middle of what could have been the most unsettling part of my day… there was this peace that washed over me.

They didn’t come for me at 10:26, or 10:30 or even 10:35. They came for me at exactly 10:36 am.

God knows every minute of our lives. He has all of our timing perfected within Himself.

And as I have been recovering and dealing with post surgery complications, all I can think about is how God sees each moment of my life… and that includes this one.

Just in case you feel delayed. Just in case you feel forgotten. Just in case you have been praying for something for a long time…

Borrow this Hope. God knows every moment of your life. None of them are a surprise… and whether He tells you in some supernatural way or not, we can all rest confidently in knowing that He holds each one of our minutes in His hands.
